Elizabeth Harper slowly opens the door to Loft 910; the place itself is something to take in for a moment. She's brought a few outfits and laid them on the scattered arrangement of sofas in the main room. She speaks softly as I give her a tour of the Loft. She is in complete awe of the place, with everything from tree branches to toy birds hanging from the ceiling, even the built in plastic tent used for a party the night before, it is the perfect setting for the photoshoot I had proposed to her before I left Brooklyn. She is lovely in ways that when we speak of mutual acquaintances she is careful not to offend and gracious of other New York musicians. We speak of odd and even numbered years, how our luck always seems to be better with round numbers, and the slight anxiety coming into 2009--odd number. She says she can barely remember anything before she moved into her current apartment with fellow musician, Caroline of Chairlift, everything happened in succession. She plays the piano with a sigh as if to say, "such a shame" because it is so far from being in tune.
Elizabeth Harper's music is like the inside of a glass of red wine on a winter night. Nonchalant with only a small hint of rose-coloured tragedy, warm and comforting, yet still a reminder of what lies outside. The way she sings is not so far from the way she speaks, as if at any time she may respond in a song. We can only look forward to a winter accompanied by her voice.
